Oil Painting Suggested Supplies for painting both outdoors and in my studio

**CELL PHONE/CAMERA!

Personal materials: For painting outdoors or even in the studio, a visor is essential! You may want a snack, beverage and a portable chair for watching my demonstration. Prepare for weather changes with layers of clothing, an umbrella for shade and bungee cords for wind. Wear water resistant shoes as there is often dew in the morning grasses.

Painting Materials: Small mirror, pliers, baby wipes, paper towels, plastic trash bag, barrier cream, odorless mineral spirits.

**Tip: lighten your load and carry a small jar of vegetable or linseed oil for both cleaning and wetting your brushes. It is not toxic if it spills.

Surfaces: To paint Nature’s ever changing light bring surfaces sizes 9 x 12 up to 16 x 20.

**Tip: tone your surface the day before so you can still wipe out the lights
I like commercial mounted canvas or linen panels: Pintura Panels or lighter weight Source Tek panels (www.canvaspanels.com)

Brushes:   Rounds: one large and small, Flats: # 8’s, 6’s, 4, 2, also short, flexible diamond shaped painting knives

Paint Box: A 12 x 16 wood paint box, styled to organize and protect both your wet panels and palette, can be Customized for carrying smaller wet panels. I use a Plexiglas palette, custom cut to fit the box at a glass company, a scraper cleans it, and the closed lid holds it in place to save your paint.

My Basic 10 Tube Palette:  Opaque: Titanium white (large), Cadmium yellow light, Cadmium yellow deep, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Orange Transparent: Indian Yellow, Transparent Red Oxide, Permanent Rose or Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine Blue, Viridian

**Tip: Load your palette at home before coming

Opaque Classic Oil colors I use: Titanium white, Cadmium Yellow Light, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Cadmium Yelllow Orange, Yellow Ochre, Orange
Transparent Classic Oil colors I use: Hansa yellow orange, Transparent Red Oxide, Alizarin Crimson, Quinacridone Rose, Ultramarine Blue, Viridian Green (manufacturers label the same HUE differently, thus this 2nd list)

Medium: In a small jar, I like 5 to 1 or 2 ratio, linseed or stand oil to retouch varnish. . . keeps it shiney, keeps the thin darks from looking dry and sunken

Easel: I use the versatile "Take-It Easel" hand made by my son, Tobin, which supports your oil supplies as well as your painting.

Prepare for weather changes with layers of clothing, an umbrella for shade and bungee cords for wind. Wear water resistant shoes as there is often dew in the morning grasses.

Painting Materials: A small mirror, tape, supporting board or foam core (I use black to eliminate glare), barrier cream, paper towels, baby wipes, plastic trash bag, two brushes – soft and stiff for blending or erasing, and blending stomps or tortillons. See my pastel dust catcher: scored and folded foam core 6" x 20"

Pastels: I like half sticks for mark making ease. Half stick sets provide more colors for less. I brake full sticks anyway. More brands, more hues. Great American, Sennelier, Schmincke and Terry Ludwig’s are all soft, 96 harder “Nupastels” cost less.

Paper: I use and highly recommend sanded archival surfaces in manageable sizes 9 x 12 up to 14 x 18. Colors are fun. I like UArt pastel paper 400 grit.

*Tip: tape paper to foam core on same size boards, a home-made portfolio is both light weight and protective

Easel: I use the versatile "Take-It Easel" hand made by my son, Tobin, which supports your pastels as well as your painting.
